CITES rejected European Union proposals to regulate trade of the Spiny dogfish (Squalus acandthias), also known as 'rock salmon' and the fish in a lot of Britain's fish & chips. EU representatives reported that the spiny dogfish population has decreased by 80% since 1980, but the United Nations Food and Agriculture organization said that the sharks did not meet the 'biological decline criteria' used to determine if regulation is necessary. Wildlife protection groups decried the decision as being shaped by commercial fishing interests.
L'aiguillat commun est un requin plus mince et plus petit, portant de petites taches blanches. Il peut atteindre un mètre de long et voyage en groupe. On le trouve dans les eaux froides et côtières des quatre coins du globe. Plus connu sous le nom de saumonette, il est utilisé dans les fish and chips anglais. En Allemagne, sa chair est fumée et très prisée. Le WWF demande aux gouvernements de l'inscrire à l'Annexe II de la Convention.
